An animation for a fictional mental health organization, called mind beings, to bring awareness around the risks and challenges of loneliness around newcomers in Vancouver, BC – Canada.

Project developed as my Graduation Project for the Digital Design Program at Vancouver Film School. Collaboration with Holden Zaborniak for sound design.

Character Design

The idea behind the Hero's head and its weird shape was to show their feelings and emotions with it. The head's shape resembles a sad, a neutral, or a happy mouth curve depending on the mood.

After this concept, I played with some clay to understand more of the volume and angles. Also, did some character turn arounds views of the first look of the Hero. And gathered feedback from friends and my mentor to push the hero's body design to fit better the cool and thoughtful head shape idea.

The Length Challenge

1st Storyboard - 2 min : 38s

I got to a point that the first visualization of the script were too long for the time that I had to execute the project.

Animatic - 1 min : 38s

So for the animatic I reworked the story, cutting out some scenes and exploring new ones to keep resonating with the audience.

Animatic – 1m:38s

Greyscale

I worked in grayscale while developing the assets for the animation to focus on the values to prioritize which elements for each scene.

Color Script

  • I developed a color script to help with my color exploration and decisions for each scene.
